ACC bus drivers get Labor Day off, but while Lewis said she understood the importance of rest, she’d rather be out driving her bus. “I don’t want to be boxed in,” she said. “I want to outside, I want the fresh air, I want to be doing something … I think if life afforded me and I was rich, I could do this.” Lewis, whose nickname is “Sunshine,” said in 25 years of driving buses, the COVID-19 pandemic made her realize how important her job was in making people feel seen and checked on. “If I had happiness dust, I would sprinkle it everywhere, you know,” she said. “I want to see and be a part of this world that I want to see and come back to me, which is all the light, the shine, the caring parts. Just to be there for somebody that really needs me and that loving, caring person. You may spend 10 minutes with me on this bus, but let me make that 10 minutes your best 10 minutes.”
